Mannesium bath oil?

Hi I read that Sandy used a magnesium body oil for cramps. Is the bath oil ok to use and may I ask which one to buy? I also suffer with arthrits so I am keen to give this a go.. My consultant has put me on Vitamin D as well as she says I am very defficient in this when I mentioned that I get so weird aches and pains. I have been on Glivec 400mg since Nov 03 and have always suffered with the cramps etc, and the hand ones are very werid! I take 300mg quinnine at night and I think it helps a bit.

Since Sandy suggested using magnesium oil for cramps I have been trying it - you spray it on twice a day and rub it into your legs or arms.  I think it is helping a good deal, even if my unbelieving husband mutters about "placebo effect"!  I found it in a well-known chain of health food shops - I don't think I'm supposed to mention which one, is that right - no advertising?  It's not a bath oil, though.  I'm still getting the Glivec cramps, but my other aches seem to be much reduced.  I'd say it's well worth a try.

Magnesium bath salts are also very useful .... a pleasant way to just soak it into your skin. The 'oil' is more convenient for me but the bath salts are equally good. You can get the oil (and  the bath salts) online or at good chemists. Just google magnesium salts/oil.

Glad to hear you are using Vit D too.. the current research is pointing to low levels of this vitamin as a major health hazard. I take 2000 iu per day and plan to up the dose to 5000 iu.

Best wishes

Sandy

Hi Sandy/everyone - Happy and Healthy New Year to you all.
I too tried magnesium oil for a few weeks before Christmas, and felt it was reducing my cramps. However, we were away for a night just before Christmas and the bottle top came loose in my overnight bag - so no oil and damp clothes.  I re-ordered from my favourite on-line retailer (who I use through easyfundraising.co.uk, raising funds for  CMLSupportGroup - had to get that in)  and the new bottle arrived yesterday. I had also written to my specialist to ask her for a view, as I had mentioned the cramp issue to her on my last visit.

Dr Keenan has written back, saying there is no reason she is aware of not to use magnesium oil, and she will get my magnesium level checked at my next appointment on 2 February. I therefore think I have a chance to do a small scale trial with one subject - me! I am not going to start using the oil until after my appointment, and we'll see what my  baseline level is on 2 Feb. I will then use the oil for 3 months and get the level checked at my next appointement, and see if there is any significant change to either the level or the way I feel.  I will of course keep you up to date with the findings.

Best wishes to all.

Alastair

Dear Alistair,

firstly thank you for ordering your magnesium oil via 'easyfundraising.co.uk'..... and for helping to raise funds for the CML Support Group: it is really appreciated.

secondly, thanks for letting us know about your plans re: magnesium level testng. It will be really interesting to see how effectively the oil is in raising your plasma levels of this important mineral. I have certainly benefitted from using the oil and find that I get very few aches and pains/cramps etc. However I have no idea what my pre and post levels of magnesium were/are. I think it is a great idea to do an individual trial- at least if you do respond well it may encourage others who suffer cramps and joint/muscle pain to try supplementing with this mineral. I believe low levels are also found in those with cardio-vascular problems so all in all this might be an important supplement for many of us.

Looking forward to your updates.

Sandy

Hi all,

just back from my 3 monthly appointment - still  PCRU at 0.00% BCR/ABL - 21 months now.

The hospital are doing a serum magnesium on the bloods taken today, and happy to do it again in 3 months to see what difference using the oil makes. So her we go on twice daily spraying and rubbing in. My wife is using it as well for other reasons, so we should remind each other to do it regularly. Will let you know what the results are in 3 months. Consultant interested in the answers as well.

Hi Alistair... looking forward to the 3 month data from your phase 1 trial ;o))) this might be the start of something very helpful for cramping side effects of I (Glivec).

Sandy

I've been using it for about a month now, and think it is helping.  My leg cramps have been a little easier than previously, I think - at least I haven't been woken up by them much recently - and I also have fewer general aches and stiffness in the morning.  I intend to carry on!
