The following articles may be of interest to those of us who may want to supplement magnesium to counter some side effects of TKIs and ... and quite frankly, life in general! Sandy http://www.nutritionalmagnesium.org/metabolic-syndrome-and-magnesium/ some more articles on mag levels related to muscle cramps etc. http://www.nutritionalmagnesium.org/category/research/muscle-health-rese... What Are the Signs of Magnesium Deficiency? Magnesium is an essential mineral and helps nerves, muscles and other parts of the body function properly. A magnesium deficiency disrupts the balance of other minerals, and symptoms range from minor effects to serious reactions. Adequate supplies of magnesium are needed throughout the body to help maintain cells, build hormones and create energy. Chronic conditions such as liver disorders, kidney problems or heart failure may indicate magnesium deficiencies. Because magnesium is so important in maintaining and balancing the body’s system, these five signs may suggest a deficiency: 1. Muscle tremors or cramps. Signs of severe deficiencies might include tingling, numbness, muscle contractions, or involuntary eye movements. 2. Irregular heartbeat or coronary spasm, which blocks blood flow to the heart. Severely low levels could cause heart attack or death. 3. Fatigue and weakness. Doctors sometimes recommend magnesium supplements or injections for chronic fatigue syndrome. 4. Irritability, confusion, or even personality changes. http://www.nutritionalmagnesium.org/what-are-the-signs-of-magnesium-defi...

Magnesium vs Calcium levels
Categories:
Hi Sandy,
This is very useful information as we are not quite sure of the effects of long term use of tkis on bone health.Currently am on a calcium/magnesium supplement for muscle cramps and bone pains to see if this helps.
Have been looking up how one can use diet as a natural response to magnesium needs and the following comes up as foods rich in magnesium-
Dark leafy greens-chard,spinach and kale especially if grown on magnesium rich soils
Nuts and seeds-almonds,brazil nuts and flaxseed etc
Fish-oily types
Soya beans
Avocado
Bananas-also rich in potassium
Dark chocolate
One could do a similar list for foods rich in calcium and also list those other than dairy products where patients may have allergies to these.
Whereas you specify the conditions that arise from a lack of magnesium my GP has warned me to be careful not to overdose on calcium supplements as there is potential for heart damage.A natural response would be a pint of full fat milk per day preferably organic where the omegas are higher and the antibiotics given to cows are limited.
Oh and if you live in a hard water area dont forget to drink lots of tap water because it is rich in magnesium!
Organising a diet rich in magnesium ,calcium and potassium might be a little expensive and also needs discipline
I would like to come of the supplements and use the dietary approach-any views?
Best wishes
John W
