Differences in generic imatinib manufacturers?

Categories:

Hi folks,
I've been on Gleevec (the US spelling for Glivec lol) for CML since 2018, and have been in deep molecular remission for a few years now.
I received the medication via the Novartis patient assistance program until the start of 2025, when they removed Gleevec from the program.
I then switched to generic imatinib produced by Aurobindo, and since then I've seen steady and startling increases in my BCR-ABL results. The CML was "not detected" when I switched. It's since increased to .0017% and now to .014%. That's still in MMR, but not trending well. My next report is due in early December, and naturally, I'm nervous.
I've found a source for imatinib produced by Teva or Upsher - and I'm going to pull the trigger and switch if the next result isn't on the way back to "normal."

Here's my question: Is anyone familiar with, or had experience with, different results based on the imatinib's manufacturer? I know that may not be the cause of what's happening with me - but the timing of the medication switch and the subsequent increase from "not detected" to being close to the MMR grey zone seems awfully coincidental.

Thanks for any contribution you may have :)

I got sight of an unpublished report a few years ago about how much imatinib was actually in a 100mg across various manufacturers. To cut a long story short, they were not all the same but Glivec / Gleevec was not exactly gold standard and was quite a bit out of range. I think if you take one individual tablet you might get 350mg, or you might get 450mg. But when you take it over 100 tablets it probably works out all the same.

Two things spring to mind … labs get better over time, and can detect things they used not to.

If you really like branded Glivec and thing there is a difference then look for the Sandoz generic. They are both made by Novartis.

David.

Thanks for the info. Interesting, but not surprising.
I've been unable to find a low-price source of the Sandoz generic here yet; that would naturally be my first choice, but I've located a source (with an assistance program that cuts my price to zero) that carries the Teva and Upsher ones - so I'm crossing my fingers.
Thanks again.
