Covid jab in UK for all blood cancer patients

Categories:

To All,
If in UK dont forget that as a blood cancer patient or as an over 75 you qualify for the the latest Spring/Summer top up jab .As usual if you go into the NHS site or call 119 you can find a pharmacy near you that offers appointments.Separate arrangements may exist for Wales and Scotland though.
On this occasion NHS fortunately have listed those conditions or treatments where there is a liklihood of immuno-suppression-blood cancers are listed as a qualifier.
CML is not listed as a specific condition but if your pharmacy is in doubt I suggest you take along your medicine box or any letter to you from your clinic re your condition.

Some describe tkis as a form of chemotherapy (that may well weaken your immune system) but actually as we all know they are targeted molecular therapy and not the chemotherepeutic agents that are often used in the treatment of other leukaemias. However long term use of tkis may well have an effect on immunity levels.

I had my jab this evening and so far there is absolutely no reaction.
Best wishes
John

Hi John

NHS Wales sent a letter with an appointment for my next Covid jab - I think this will be number 10 - which arrived yesterday. The appointment was on my birthday, for which my wife already has plans so I have requested a change of date. Good to know they are on the ball, despite my confusing them by having a GP in Wales but seeing a consultant haematologist in England!

Hi Aliistair,
Yes I read that immunity that we may have built up from previous jabs may have started to wane .
Friends of mine who dont have CML but are over 75 but decline the jab said to me -oh its only mild if you get Covid seem to be rather blase about the risk .
Basically as you age your immune system weakens ;add to that we dont know how much long term use of tkis affects us nor do we fully understand how having the condition and for example having a lower lymphocyte score puts us at risk.
With best wishes
John
