Ferritin

Hi
I was wondering if you know of a site that has a list of low iron foods, or a book? Due to my CML and AMN107 which cause me to have many transfusions my ferritin is quite high, My Onc has increased my Exjade and I may have to go back on Desferol or a combination. I wanted to lower my intake of Iron but cannot find any web sites that have a list of foods with low iron.. My count is well over 2500.

Hi,

I searched for foods rich in iron on the web, came up with the following, which is advice on what to eat if anaemic.
It does give a list of foods rich in iron (bit general though) which you could try reducing / avoiding.

. What foods contain the most iron?
If laboratory tests show that you are anaemic, eating the right diet can help. Some good choices for an iron-rich diet include: lean meats, liver, eggs, green leafy vegetables (e.g. spinach, kale), wheat germ, whole grain breads and cereals, raisins, and molasses. If you have been diagnosed as having iron deficiency anaemia, or you are pregnant or breast feeding, iron in the form of vitamin pills or tablets is usually needed to provide the extra iron needed in these states.

Hi

I have the opposite problem and found when investigating it is not only the foods you eat but how you eat as well.

The body does not absorb iron very well and they recommend not drinking tea within 30 minutes of eating as it stops you from absorbing the iron in the food - so drink tea with everything you eat, also vitamin c helps you absorb iron so don't drink juice or have citrus fruits with meals.
