Niacin 500 mg twice a day

Hello everybody,

I would like to take Niacin (to decrease my cholesterol)  at 500 mg twice a day. Did anybody knows if it is safe with my 100 mg of Sprycel? The field is very confusing when they talk about vitamin B3 complex. Niacin is the acid form and seemed to be the active one against cholesterol and nicotinamide is the active one against non melanoma skin cancer.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Karrine,

The reason I  reply to you is that I was considering niacin or Vitamin B3  as my uric acid is low and this would push it up nearer to normal.Niacin it seems occurs naturally in peanuts and tuna and I believe is very evident in Marmite or Vegemite.Apparently an overdose of niacin say taking 2000mg per day might causes ulcers of the stomach, and lead to liver damage. It might lead to elevation of uric acid in the blood and lead to gout and it might lead to higher blood sugar. It would apparently interact with caffeine.I see that you intend to take 1000 mg daily.I think that I would  be cautious about taking any supplement to excess when taking a tki-many of the tkis hammer the liver so taking a high dose of niacin might prove to be unwise.

If you wish to reduce your cholesterol then one might first seek advice from a doctor to see what other medicine might be offered and to seek advice regarding the fairly high dose niacin that you propose and you might need to monitor your uric acid level.

I am not sure if I need to take action to increase my low uric acid level-my doctor says it is not an issue and is not needed.

I trust then helps a little

Best wishes

John

Thank you very much. You are very wise. I will search for another way.

Best,

You might want to read about niacin (B3) here: http://www.doctoryourself.com/JOM1.html

B3 is a crucial vitamin for health in general - as are all of the B Vits. Niacin or a lack of it is also implicated in arthritic conditions, cardiovascular health etc. etc.

I find that 'Doctor Yourself' is an excellent resource for finding reliable information about Vit therapy.
