My body is retaining a lot of water

Categories:

Hey does anyone know how to reduce the way my body retains water? My eyes and stomach are swollen. I’m on gleevec 400mg a day

The worst case scenario is your kidneys are failing.
Otherwise you got too much salt in your system .
Or mabey you eat too much foods that require
lots of water to digest. Drink more water.
Your body might be out of tune.
TKI’s require adequate hydration.
Look at the whole picture of your consumption.
You might find the answer.

Look at your food and liquid intake.  Soda/pop, soft drinks contain salt. So do some juices like tomato juice. Check the labels,  canned food and frozen prepared foods are high in sodium.  Hot dogs, bacon ham various other meats are high in salt as is Chinese take out. The best advice I can give is to check the internet for foods high in salt or sodium and see if you have been innocently eating them.  Read the labels on foods you buy.  I have had to cut out most convenience and prepared foods because of the salt level.

I can always tell when I have eaten the wrong things...and when I have eaten right.  My shoes and rings fit differently.  My face is not swollen.

hope you can get this under control.  Sure you can.  Best wishes Gitel.

These are all helpful answers, but the real reason is:  this is what happens on Gleevec 400 mg.  There is a disturbance to the balance of fluid outside the cells and inside the cells - the permeability is screwed up.  Can't be helped and is just an effect of the TKI.  Things can definitely be made worse by too much sodium intake, for sure, but even if you're scrupulous it still happens.  As far as I can tell, it doesn't go away, but is made better with less drug.

To follow on from Kat, my husband has had terrible eye swelling on Sprycel . Reducing his medication from 100 to 50 mg has made a huge difference , but it still hasn’t gone away. It’s worst in the morning and gradually improves throughout the day - probably a combination of sleeping pretty flat and taking the TKI in the eve. He has been lucky so far,  and this has been the worst side effect but he hates that it is so noticeable.

Curcumin helps inflammation so he takes 5 mg a day.

Best wishes Louise

I also had full body edema from Gleevec 400mg. Had to discontinue the drug after just 44 days because I had gained ten pounds in three days - all fluid. My opthamologist said even my eyeballs were swollen. Switched to Tasigna and the edema has lessened considerably.

Have you talked with your oncologist about possibly switching to another TKI ?

At last visit four days ago my oncologist prescribed hydrochlorothiazide 25mg, a diuretic, because I have also had edema. It does seem to help. My eyelids are less swollen, in particular, which is nice. Is that a possibility for you? I'm also cutting back on salt.
