Alcohol

Categories:

I’ve been a member of the “club” for over 11 years now and thankfully live a healthy lifestyle, never had any problems with the advice and care I receive from my consultant at are quarterly yearly meetings, but one topic that seems to be a grey area is alcohol consumption, to be honest my own alcohol consumption is probably less than a bottle of wine in a year, but I do wonder would a social event were more alcohol might be consumed would have a very detrimental effect on all the respectful effort we give the tki medication.

“Cheers”

Limiting alcohol consumption is good for anyone, not just someone taking TKIs.

There is no particular reason to avoid alcohol when taking TKIs other than general health. These things are taken into account during clinical trials, which is why we know not to eat grapefruit with some TKIs. I can assure you that if grapefruit is considered, so is grog!

Perhaps a good reason to either limit or eliminate consumption of alcohol while on TKIs is simply to help protect the liver. Hepatotoxicity is a word that does appear in articles relating to TKIs. Better safe than sorry. A good functioning liver is essential especially for people taking daily medications like us with CML. The liver filters and removes toxins from the blood as one of its main functions. I would argue that TKIs, like many medications and while being beneficial, are essentially toxic substances. Better to make the job easier for the liver and avoid as many toxins as possible.

First, thank you for the replies to my question, and to myself I say, you’ve been informed and, in a very friendly way, told. Again many thanks.

Peter.
